SCANDINAVIAN STYLE,  THE EDITED CHOICE

The Best Scandinavian rugs in the UK

If you are trying to decorate your home in the Scandinavian style, you might start with a rug. There are many options when you are on the lookout for Scandinavian rugs, so I hope this article will be of great help to you.

Walls and floors are like a backdrop for your chosen rug. Scandinavian countries are famous for their forests, so no wonder that the number one floor in Scandinavia is one made from real wood. You won’t go wrong if you choose pale, lightly-reflective real wood or laminate flooring. Another option is white-painted floorboards.

The cheeky option is to go for wall-to-wall carpet in a neutral colour. This is a great idea if you need extra sound insulation or if you like to feel warmth under your feet.

Rugs are a very important part of decorating your home, which you can read about here in A Cosy living room – How to get it right

Little rules for choosing the right rug

  • leave at least 25-40 centimetres of free floor between the rug and the walls
  • small rugs for small rooms, big rugs for big rooms
  • the rug shouldn’t be smaller than the length and width of the sofa or dining table
  • in a case of the dining table, keep a little extra all round, so there is space on the rug for a pulled-out chair (60-70 centimetres)
  • avoid the combination of rectangular tables and round rugs (and visa versa)
  • the rug should act as a foundation for your furniture
  • for a hall choose a hard-wearing rug, ideally reversible
  • if you love a rug which is too small, just buy two of them
  • keep thin rugs in place with a non-slip underlay

Grey Rugs

Grey rugs needn’t be boring. Look for an original shape or a bold geometric design. If you choose a grey rug for your home, combine it with a warm shade of wood to keep a sense of balance and not to create a space that looks too cold.

Jute & Sisal rugs

Jute and Sisal are both popular natural fibre rugs that look alike, but they are not one and the same.

Sisal is an environmentally-friendly fibre as it is biodegradable. Made from the leaves of the Agave, it is very durable. This makes it great for hallways or placing under a dining table.

With the right maintenance, Sisal rugs will last a long time and the best part is that regular vacuuming is all that is needed to keep them clean.

Jute fibres are finer and softer than Sisal, which means they wear and tear more easily. That’s why Jute should be used in the living room and in other lower foot traffic areas.

Black and white Scandinavian rugs

Black and white rugs are very popular for their graphic designs. You can use them in rooms styled with boho decor but they work even in more industrial style rooms.

Natural fibre rugs

Natural fibre rugs are woven from fibres made from plants. Typically, they are neutral in colour, durable and, best of all, affordable. The three most popular natural fibre rugs are jute, seagrass, and sisal.

Hide and Sheepskin Rugs

Another ideal Scandinavian-inspired style choice for a room would be to use a faux fur or genuine sheepskin rug.

Faux fur can both look good and keep you warm, while also being animal-friendly. Sheepskin is warm, but naturally cooling and very durable. This makes for a perfect rug. So it is great in front of your sofa or, to make things really special, for you to keep beneath your desk. So when you work you can feel like a superstar!

Scandinavian outdoor rugs

It is becoming increasingly popular to have a rug in your outside area. It really creates a special feeling on your terrace.
Outdoor rugs are very durable so you can even use them indoors in heavy traffic area like a kitchen. They will manage fine:)
