How to create a Scandinavian style bedroom

I’ve just finished a Scandinavian-style bedroom design for my friend and her partner and I am so happy I can show it to you all. They decided to adopt a Scandinavian vibe for their bedroom (even though they might not have called it that!). So, let’s reveal this project.

Terka, my friend (and client) is moving to a new flat with her partner and the bedroom was the first room they wanted to sort out.

So, after Terka contacted me, I gave her my free design guide and link to this article: Design Your Own Home Better Using These Strategies. These are the first steps toward knowing what you are doing and why.

Scandinavian-style bedroom – finding help

Many times people jump straight on Pinterest and Instagram without any previous thoughts. As a result, you can end up very confused with all the ideas these platforms show you.

Once Terka had read what I had given her she was entirely sure she had a problem. She discussed her ideas with her partner and realized they both roughly knew what they wanted. Unfortunately, they struggled to talk to each other about it and they were getting nowhere.

So, I got them to go on Pinterest and find pictures they liked – independently – and send them to me.
So they did. And guess what?

Their styles were almost identical! They both wanted a simple kind of Scandinavian-style bedroom with a few splashes of colour.

It was a great relief for me (and I bet for them too!).

3D Visualisation

As they live in Portugal, Terka had already chosen the shops they would be buying their furniture and home decor from. She sent me the links to these shops, so I could see if the colours would work well together. She also drew out the layout of the room (Did I mention she works for a construction company?). So, in this case, she didn’t need the full design service I offer, but she still needed a 3D visualization and a professional eye for colour and design.

So, with what she’d given me, I could just happily create the 3D visualisation for them. This is one of the main services I offer to my clients.

During the design process, I realized that Terka’s chosen mirror might be too small for the wall. Luckily, the company offers a bigger size too, so we could adjust the design accordingly.

3D visualization is a great help when you want to try out the different options you have. It is amazing how you can see the room before spending money on your furniture or home decor. So it will prevent you from spending on the wrong choices.

Now, Terka and Pedro are able to see their bedroom as it would be in the future.

Having the images of their room didn’t just give them an idea of how the room would look, but also made them feel happier about moving to their new place.

How to create a Scandinavian-style bedroom

First of all, think through whether the Scandinavian style is something you truly want. You can check this with your soul if you listen to my guided meditation and within 10 minutes you will know your answer.

Look for inspiration

After that, you can look for some inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram. Just don’t waste too much time there. These sites should be used as tools to help inspire you, not confuse you.

I believe that creating even a simple concept board will help you to imagine your future room. It will give you an idea of how the colours will work together and whether the furniture can be placed next to each other without hurting your eyes 🙂

If you know how to use it, create this in Photoshop otherwise I would recommend a user-friendly online tool, Canva. With this tool, you can easily create a mood board, adding colours, furniture, and inspirational images.

Choose a colour palette that includes soft neutrals such as whites, greys, and muted pastels. Opt for light-coloured flooring like light wood or white-washed floorboards to create a sense of airiness and space.

Start with bed

When you start looking for furniture, start with the bed. The bed will define the style of the whole room. Choose a simple frame. If you have no idea where to look, just go and check IKEA. It will give you a basic idea of what kind of bed you are looking for. Then look around and ideally choose a solid oak bed – it will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Bedside tables

Having two bedside tables in a holistic and Feng Shui design approach offers several benefits. Firstly, it promotes balance and symmetry in the bedroom, which is important for creating a harmonious and calming environment. Having two identical bedside tables on either side of the bed helps to visually anchor the space and create a sense of equilibrium.

From a practical perspective, having two bedside tables provides convenience and functionality. Each person in the bedroom can have their own personal space for keeping items like books, lamps, alarm clocks, or other essentials within reach. This helps to maintain a sense of individuality and organization for each occupant of the room.

In Feng Shui, having two bedside tables signifies equality and balance between partners in a relationship. It is believed to promote harmony and communication in a couple’s life, as well as support both individuals equally.

Overall, including two bedside tables in holistic and Feng Shui design not only contributes to the aesthetics and balance of the space but also enhances practicality and supports harmonious energy flow in the bedroom.

Chests of Drawers

Having a chest of drawers in your bedroom offers several advantages. Firstly, it provides valuable storage space for keeping your clothing, linens, and personal belongings organized and easily accessible. Rather than cluttering up your bedroom with piles of clothes or overflowing closets, a chest of drawers allows you to neatly store and categorize your items.

Secondly, a chest of drawers can serve as a functional and decorative piece of furniture in your bedroom. With its versatile design, you can choose a chest of drawers that complements the overall aesthetic of your room. Whether you prefer a sleek modern style or a more traditional look, there are various options available to suit your personal taste and interior design.

Additionally, a chest of drawers can act as a surface for displaying décor items like picture frames, plants, or a table lamp. This allows you to personalize your bedroom and add a touch of personality and style to the space.

From a practical standpoint, having a chest of drawers also helps to free up space in your closet or wardrobe, making it easier to find and store your clothing. It allows you to have separate compartments for different types of clothing, facilitating organization and convenience in your daily routine.

Curtains

In Scandinavian interior design, curtains play a crucial role in creating a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. Typically, light and sheer curtains are favored to maximize natural light and maintain an airy feel within the space. Opt for neutral colours like white, beige, or soft greys to complement the minimalistic Scandinavian colour palette. Instead of heavy drapes, choose lightweight fabrics such as linen or cotton to allow gentle diffused light to filter through. Keep the curtains simple with clean lines and minimal patterns, focusing on the natural texture of the fabric.

Blankets and Throws

In a Scandinavian-inspired space, these textiles add warmth, texture, and a sense of comfort. Opt for soft and natural materials like wool or cotton, which provide both insulation and breathability. Choose blankets and throws in neutral and earthy tones, such as shades of grey, beige, or warm browns, to maintain the soothing and harmonious aesthetic of Scandinavian design. Look for chunky knit blankets or woven throws with subtle textures to add depth and visual interest to the room.

Bedding

When selecting bedding for a Scandinavian-inspired space, prioritize high-quality materials like soft cotton, linen, or organic fabrics that ensure comfort and breathability.

Lighting

Firstly, maximize natural light by keeping windows unobstructed and using light-colored or sheer curtains. This allows for the soft, diffused light that is characteristic of Scandinavian interiors to fill the space. Additionally, incorporate artificial lighting that mimics the natural light. Opt for fixtures that emit a warm, soft glow, such as pendant lights with diffusers or table lamps with warm-toned bulbs. Avoid harsh or overly bright lighting, as it can disrupt the calm and serene atmosphere. Consider layering the lighting by using a combination of overhead, task, and accent lighting to create depth and enhance different areas of the room.

Small accessories

By carefully selecting and arranging accessories in the bedroom, couples can create a space that reflects their shared interests, memories, and aspirations. Personalized photo frames with pictures of cherished moments together, for instance, can evoke nostalgia and reinforce the bond between partners. Additionally, small items like decorative pillows or cushions with meaningful patterns or quotes can infuse the space with warmth and love. Incorporating a vase with fresh flowers or scented candles can create a romantic atmosphere and enhance the sensory experience. These small accessories not only contribute to the visual appeal of the room but also foster an emotional connection between partners, reminding them of their love and strengthening their relationship.

Lovebirds

Scandinavian-style bedroom offers a multitude of benefits. With its emphasis on minimalism, simplicity, and functionality, this design aesthetic promotes a calm and serene atmosphere that fosters relaxation and rejuvenation. By incorporating light colors, natural materials, and clean lines, a Scandinavian-inspired bedroom exudes an airy and balanced feel.

The careful selection of furniture, textiles, and lighting creates a harmonious and inviting space. Whether it’s the use of soft neutrals, the incorporation of cozy blankets and throws, or the strategic placement of lighting fixtures, every element in a Scandinavian-style bedroom contributes to a holistic and tranquil environment.

So, whether you’re looking to create a soothing sanctuary or embrace a minimalist lifestyle, a Scandinavian-style bedroom is sure to provide a haven of comfort and beauty.
