DIY DESIGN TIPS

How to create a healthy home

How to create a healthy home is an important question that every homeowner should ask themselves. A healthy home is not just about cleanliness, but also about the air quality, lighting, and overall atmosphere in your house.

Originally, I wrote this article in 2020. The panic over Covid-19 was very fresh and we just had no idea what we were going through. Even now, I can still feel the situation is not as calm as we all would wish for, but at least we have enough toilet paper rolls and hand sanitisers everywhere! So, I have decided to update this article so that it is more relevant to healthy homes in general and not just to fight the virus.

More than ever, I’ve been thinking of my grandmother, who was half-German, and she just loved things in order. Her mantra was “wash your hands” and her attitude was cleaning all mess she came across. She would be happy to know that her mantra is currently being repeated all over the world and that, as a consequence of the pandemic, people are more aware of the importance of a clean environment.

In the article below, I’d like to draw attention to how it is very important to live in a nice environment but it is also vital that the environment is healthy and supports our health too.

The body – the physical aspect

Movement

Make your home comfortable enough that you can move around freely. Ideally, also have a space where you can dance, practise yoga, or do any type of exercise.

Your movements will help you raise energy and increase your vibration so you will become more resistant to any illnesses.

You can find thousands of workout videos on Youtube. My personal favourites are Zuzka Light and Joe Wicks.

Zuzka is a Czech woman (like me) who I’ve been following for years – her videos are in English though! Her exercises are short and super-effective so you won’t waste your precious time.

Joe is a British guy I first noticed during lockdown when he was absolutely brilliant as he was doing daily exercises for kids and their parents as a boost to both mental and physical health.

In a healthy home, you won’t find clutter

Having a mess or clutter in your home keeps you stuck in the past and feeling sad or depressed. This is even without mentioning how stressful it can be when you try to find something! When you feel stressed you are more likely to “catch” an illness. So declutter:)

Here are the best articles about decluttering from Feng Shui specialist Karen Kingston:

And, don’t forget, when you declutter you are not just making your space and yourself happier, but you might actually make some money, so all-in-all that’s a WIN-WIN!

You can sell your stuff on Facebook MarketPlace, eBay, or Gumtree.
The perfect place where you can sell books is We buy books (they now even buy CDs, DVDs and games)

Resting well and renew your energy

Have you noticed that you are more energetic and in a better mood after a good night’s sleep? After a well-rested night, you are simply a better person – kind, positive and with more patience.

So, it is really important that your bedroom is a perfect space for a night of great sleep, and that you also have other places in your home for a quick recharge during the day.

First aid for your bedroom

Go and check your bedroom with fresh eyes (or take a photo).
Remove from your bedroom:

  • things that are not related to either a good night’s sleep or sex
  • anything broken
  • photos of your kids or parents or in-laws
  • anything from past relationships

You don’t need to make all these changes tonight but don’t procrastinate either. It needs to be done as soon as possible.

If you’re looking to create a healthy home, choosing organic cotton bedding is a great place to start. Not only is it gentle on your skin and free from harmful chemicals, but it’s also better for the environment as it’s grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton bedding feels soft and luxurious against your skin, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep while reducing exposure to toxins that can negatively impact your health over time. Plus, organic cotton is durable and long-lasting so you won’t need to replace your bedding as frequently which reduces waste in landfills.

The best part?
You’ll feel good about making an eco-friendly choice every time you slip into bed at night!

Healthy home and your sacred space

In your home, create a space where you can stay comfortable and quiet. Keep this place just for you. It could be your favourite armchair or a pillow in a corner of your bedroom.

Meditate here, write in your journal or even pray. All these will help to stay calm. You can even plan and dream of your perfect home. If you need guidance to find your perfect home, check my visualisation. I will walk you through your imagination and you will see your ‘soul home’ (soul mate – home).

The spirit – your emotions

Rule no.1 – don’t bring to your home anything you don’t want – this relates to physical objects but also anything else: gossip, fights or any nastiness.

How do you feel at home? It is very important for your own health that you feel happy and calm in your own place. There shouldn’t be any things that irritate you.

Don’t forget, there might be things that you don’t see as a problem or things you just “can not” see because you have let them be for so long, so they seem normal now. That’s why it is so important to regularly declutter because it is the biggest creator of stress in our homes.

In the same vein, if there is anything that needs to be fixed – fix it. Decluttering and getting organized helps to feel less stressed at home.

On top of this, it is great to pay attention to the health zone in every room of your house and try to treat it with extra love. You can bring fresh flowers to the room, so you will smile every time you enter this room.

The mind – the visual side of your healthy home

Pretty things make us happy.

As above, when you are happy, you are more resistant to anything negative. Your home needs to please you when you are there. It will give you the energy you need. It will give you hope that everything in your life is manageable. And it will support you when you feel unsafe.

If you know you feel sad most of the time – try to find a home decor style that will make you laugh – you might feel silly for a few days but a little bit of a smile is better than nothing. Or treat yourself to something that will make you feel special: maybe an expensive candle, a beautiful cushion or a nice throw.

It is your home and your space, where you and your family will live. Keep it nice, healthy and safe.
